This is the News in Brief, from the United Nations.
More than 140,000 displaced in northeast Nigeria Renewed violence in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Borno has displaced more than 140,000 people this year alone, and with many farmers having missed planting seasons, three million people are now food insecure.
UN relief chief and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mark Lowcock, shared these observations on Friday, following a visit to the war-battered region.
Most of the violence has been perpetrated by extremist group Boko Haram, with more than seven million people currently in need of humanitarian assistance in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States, he said.
Successful military and security measures against insurgents have enabled the country to regain control over some former-terrorist strongholds, but military action on its own “will not solve the problem”, he added, urging the Nigerian Government to address the root causes of the crisis.
This year, the UN and humanitarian partners have provided life-saving assistance to more than 3.8 million people.
38 UN aid workers have been killed since 2011, including ten who died at the hands of Boko Haram and non-State armed groups, in just the past 18 months - six more are still missing.
UN rights chief orders probe into rights abuses in Chile Amid mounting reports of human rights violations and abuses during street demonstrations against inequality in Chile, the UN rights chief, Michelle Bachelet, on Friday announced she was sending a special team to the country to investigate.
From 28 October through 22 November, three officers will examine allegations, meet with various actors and gather information on the alleged abuses against protesters.
There have been demonstrations against falli ng wages, education costs and lack of health services for nearly a week. At least 18 have reportedly died in the violence.
The team, which will be based in the capital city of Santiago, will visit cities throughout the nation, also looking into the root causes of the protests.
Meanwhile, in Iraq, five were killed on Friday during ongoing anti-Government protests, two of them died after being hit by tear gas canisters reportedly fired by security forces.
The UN chief António Guterres called for leaders everywhere to “listen to the real problems of real people” if they want to end the global wave of unrest.
New findings on treating malignant lung disease New research on the rare, understudied cancer, malignant pleural mesothelioma, was published on Friday by a team of scientists, identifying new ways of reporting biopsy results and effective treatment programmes.
The findings from the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)and partners will enable identification of characteristics that could explain the differences in overall survival and response to treatment, and could improve understanding of the causes of the lethal disease.
The cancer is associated with exposure to carcinogenic mineral fibres present in asbestos. Most patients with the condition die within two years of diagnosis.
The use of asbestos has been banned in many developed countries, yet despite regulatory actions, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the United States reports that the annual number of malignant mesothelioma deaths remains substantial.
